IOSCO Chairman Greg Medcraft has discussed digital disruption in capital markets in a speech at Carnegie Mellon University. He identifies blockchain technology, the algorithm behind bitcoin, as having the potential to transform capital markets due to: its efficiency and speed; disintermediation, i.e. eliminating the need for a trusted third party; reduced transaction costs; and improved market access for investors and issuers.
